A Brief History

The Vernon Golf and Country Club offers a superior golfing experience and has been an integral part of the City of Vernon since its inception in 1913. The club was originally located in the BX before moving to its current site in 1920. In its early years the course was nine holes expanding to a full 18 hole championship course under the watchful eyes of Ernie Brown and Dan Kitsul. The club was initially operated as a company complete with shareholders and a board of directors. In the 1960’s, under the leadership of Frank King, the club was reformed under the Societies act. This changed the ownership of the assets to the members of the club. The original clubhouse, a traditional rectangular building around a stone fireplace, was situated where the upper putting green now sits. After hosting many celebrations, and with plenty of stories and memories, the clubhouse was finally replaced in 1987. It received another facelift in 2021 and today the clubhouse provides members, guests and the public with with a stunning view from the deck and an ambience that is warm and friendly.

The Golf Course

The championship par 72 course plays to the 6609 yards indicated on scorecard. While this may not be as long as some courses, it has been stated by members and guests alike that the course’s defense are the greens. They run fast and true and are filled with subtle nuances that even long time members still find difficult to master. The CN Railroad bisects the course creating an “inside five”. These five holes are the perfect tonic for the golfer wanting to get out for a golf fix before sunset. The first hole is a short dogleg with Vernon Creek bubbling along on the right side. The second hole is rated as the number one handicap hole and for good reason. The entire right side of the hole is out of bounds as well as the first 200 yards on the left. From there the fairway narrows and it is a solid test from tee to green. After crossing the tracks to holes 3-15 the golfer is met with a traditionally laid out course featuring towering lombardi poplars and mature weeping willows that stand as custodians over the parkland setting. These sentinels have witnessed many progressive course changes over the years. The Crossroads Concession provides all the snacks and beverages needed as is passed three times during the round. After completing the 15th hole the golfer again crosses the tracks to complete the last three holes of the inside five and face one of the strongest finishes in the Okanagan. The par four 460 yard 16th hole brings several challenges including: OB both left and right, an uphill tee shot to a strategically placed tree at the top of the hill and a sidehill lie for the approach shot to the green. Hole 17 is a difficult par three with a narrow sloping green. The finishing hole is a dream for those right hand golfers possessing the power fade shot. Once again Vernon Creek comes into play along the right hand side of an undulating fairway. The three tiered green is protected by “Pete’s Pond” that features a beautiful fountain and is surrounded by bunkers left, right and long.

The Vernon Golf and Country Club has long provided a true golf experience from the moment you check in at the golf shop to the time you leave the 19th hole in the clubhouse.
